Imagining the Town of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in 1906

What did Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) look like before it became the neighbourhood we know today? In 1906, thirty years after it had been established as a village and newly incorporated as a town, NDG stood on the edge of major change. Development was spreading westward from Westmount, and local landowners and new investors were preparing to transform the landscape. This walk focuses less on what can be seen today and more on what can be imagined. We will visit locations where key features of the town once stood—some now vanished, others leaving only faint traces, and a few that remain. Together, we will attempt to reconstruct the town as it was, erasing 120 years of change and stepping back to a moment just before rapid suburban growth reshaped Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
